Hi cinema lovers. I hope you are all doing well. As you all know, we are in times where there are not so many new movies to watch at the cinema. Although The Northman will be released in 19 days, on April 22, and Everything Everywhere All at Once is released but not come all the countries yet, I think one of the best things to do is watch old movies which we haven’t found a time to watch yet. To be honest, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly was in that category for me. I always wanted to watch it but couldn’t create time for it. However, yesterday I finally had time to watch it and it was one of the most fun experiences I have ever had in my life.

Even though I literally fascinated by the movie, I don’t see a need of doing criticism about the movie which is 53 years old. Today, I want to talk about 5 backstage things in the movie. I hope you all enjoy it.

There are some spoilers about the movie in this blog. So if you haven’t seen the movie yet, please watch the movie first and then come back to read the blog :)

1)Clint Eastwood Promised to Never Work With Sergio Leone Again

Clint Eastwood as Blondie(The Good)

Although the movie was an absolute masterpiece and the movie satisfied nearly all of its viewers, there was also some sad news. After the movie, Clint Eastwood announced he’ll never work with Sergio Leone again due to Sergio’s perfectionist personality. Sergio Leone is a director well-known for shooting the same scenes numerous times and selecting the perfect one among them. It is obvious that after working with Sergio Leone for 3 movies, Clint Eastwood is tired of Sergio Leone and he decided to finish his work relationship with the Italian director.

One year later, Sergio Leone asked Clint Eastwood to play in Once Upon a Time in West, however, Clint Eastwood kept his promise and Henry Fonda played in the movie instead of Clint Eastwood.

2)Clint Eastwood Didn’t Want to Play In The Movie After Reading the Scenario

Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach on the set of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

We’re continuing with another backstage fact about Clint Eastwood. After reading the scenario of the movie, Clint Eastwood didn’t want to play in the 3rd movie of The Dollar Trilogy. Although it seems like weird to do not to want to involve in the last movie of a trilogy in which one has played for 2 movies, Clint Eastwood got valid reasons for this decision, at least valid for him. After reading the script, Clint Eastwood didn’t want to play in the movie due to his concerns about staying in the shade of Eli Wallach’s character Tuco, The Ugly. Luckily, Clint Eastwood later gave up on this decision and played in the movie.

3) The Bridge is Blown Up Twice

As we all know Blondie and Tuco blow up the bridge in order to continue their way through the gold in the graveyard, the bridge was blown up twice due to one set worker accidentally pressing the blast button. Therefore, they had to build the same bridge again in order to shoot the scene.

4) The Dog Wasn’t Supposed to be in the Scene

Ecstasy of Gold Scene where Eli Wallach is scared of the dog.

At the very beginning of the Ecstasy of Gold scene, a dog appears on the scene and we see Tuco is scared of it. Although it seems like a pretty normal scene, the appearance of the dog was unscripted. Sergio Leone intentionally released the dog in order to scare Eli Wallach and make the scene more realistic.

5)Eli Wallach Didn’t Use Any Stuntman in the Train Scene

Tuco trying to snatch his handcuff

In the railway scene, Tuco was handcuffed by a man who was trying to hand over Tuco to justice. Eventually, Tuco kills the man, however, he couldn’t break his handcuff. Thereby, Tuco makes a plan which the train will break his handcuff by going over it.

In the shooting process of this scene, even though Eli Wallach wanted to use a stuntman to shoot this scene, Sergio Leone insisted Eli Wallach play this scene on his own. You can watch the scene by clicking on this link.

BONUS-6)Clint Eastwood Didn’t Got The Most Screentime

From left to right: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, and Lee Van Cleef in the The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly set.

Even though Clint Eastwood was the most paid actor in the movie(250000$) and he has the leading role, Eli Wallach’s character(Tuco) got the most screentime in the movie.

I hope you all enjoyed from this blog. While I was writing the blog, I realized there are lot things to talk about the movie. Therefore, maybe I can write a criticism blog about The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly when I finished the Dollar Trilogy. Anyway, please don’t forget to share the blog with your friends and don’t forget to like it. Hope to see you in future blogs.
